WHY CHOOSE ART AND DESIGN?
A Level Art and Design provides students the opportunity to develop a broad range of Art and Design skills that could lead to further education, or a career in the creative and cultural industries. The course offers students the opportunity to explore practical, critical and contextual work through a range of 2D and or 3D processes and media.

 

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Students will complete a foundational year centralized around the formal elements. They will learn new skill and enhance previous knowledge to enable them to work independently, taking creative risks and developing ideas. This part of course builds skill often required before starting a Higher Education course.

Fine Art or Photography

The fine art specialism can incorporate the following areas of study:

  • painting and drawing
  • mixed media, including collage and assemblage
  • performance and conceptual art
  • sculpture
  • land or environmental art
  • installation
  • printmaking
  • animation, video, photography
  • digital media

 Whereas, the photography specialism will focus on:

  • photographing people
  • photographing places
  • still-life photography
  • documentary photography
  • photojournalism
  • experimental imagery
  • photographic installation
  • fashion photography
  • digital imaging
  • moving image (video, film, animation)

  

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Personal Investigation – 60%

This will include a portfolio of work showing a personal response to a starting point, brief, scenario or stimulus.

AND A related study: an extended response of a guided minimum of 1000-3000 words.

Externally Set Task – 40%

This will start on the 1st February in the final year of the course, and will provide students with a number of themes. Students produce a response based on one of these options.

Students are expected to visit galleries and studios independently as well as part of the school organised visits to enhance their contextual studies and investigations.
