Travelling Safely to and from Stratton School
At Stratton School, the safety of our students, families, staff and wider community is extremely important. We encourage all students to travel safely, responsibly and considerately, whether they walk, cycle, use a scooter, travel by bus or arrive by car.
We also ask students and families to remember that behaviour on the journey to and from school reflects our school community.
🚶 Walking to School
Walking is a healthy and sustainable way to travel to school, and we encourage students who live within a reasonable distance to walk where it is safe to do so.
Students should:
- Use pavements and designated pedestrian routes wherever available.
- Be courteous to other pedestrians and allow sufficient room for others to pass.
- Never walk in the middle of the road, including when walking as part of a larger group.
- Take particular care on Eagle Farm Road, especially during the busy periods before and after school.
- Cross roads carefully, using recognised crossing points wherever possible.
- Remain alert to traffic and avoid being distracted by mobile phones when crossing roads.
- Be respectful of local residents and their property.
Students walking in groups should ensure they do not spread across the pavement or enter the roadway unnecessarily.
🚲 Cycling to School
Students are welcome to cycle to Stratton School and are expected to do so safely and responsibly.
Students cycling to school should:
- Wear a properly fitted cycle helmet. Although cycle helmets are recommended rather than a general legal requirement Stratton School strongly encourages students who cycle / scooter to and from school to wear one.
- Carry suitable front and rear cycle lights so they are available when required.
- Use a white front light and red rear light between sunset and sunrise, as required by law.
- Make sure their bicycle is roadworthy, including effective brakes and properly inflated tyres.
- Follow the Highway Code and all relevant road signs and signals.
- Ride considerately and remain alert to pedestrians and other road users.
- Avoid distractions which could affect their awareness of traffic or hazards.
🛴 Scooters
Students travelling on a non-electric push scooter should:
- Wear an appropriately fitted helmet.
- Travel carefully and at an appropriate speed.
- Give priority and consideration to pedestrians.
- Dismount where necessary, particularly in busy pedestrian areas and around the school entrance.
- Secure their scooter appropriately once on the school site.
⚡ E-Scooters: Do Not Bring Them to School
Privately owned e-scooters must not be brought to Stratton School or used to travel to or from school.
It is illegal to ride a privately owned e-scooter on public roads, pavements or other public spaces. Privately owned e-scooters may only be used on private land with the landowner's permission. Police may seize an e-scooter being used illegally.
🔒 Bike and Scooter Storage
Students bringing a bicycle or permitted scooter onto the school site must:
- Leave it in the designated bike sheds or storage areas.
- Secure it with a suitable lock whenever it is left unattended.
- Secure the frame, and where possible the wheels, to the cycle stand.
- Remove valuable accessories or belongings that can easily be taken.
Please remember
All bicycles and scooters are brought onto the school site and left in the bike sheds at the owner's own risk.
Stratton School cannot accept responsibility for the loss, theft or damage of bicycles, scooters, helmets or accessories brought onto the school site.
If a theft is reported, the school will support an appropriate police investigation, including responding to requests from the police for relevant CCTV footage where it is available.
🚌 Travelling by Bus
Students travelling to or from school by bus should behave safely and respectfully throughout their journey.
At the end of the school day, students must:
- Go promptly to their allocated bus pick-up zone.
- Wait safely and follow instructions from school staff.
- Queue and board in a calm and orderly manner.
- Be respectful towards the driver, other students and members of the public.
- Behave appropriately throughout the journey.
Students are reminded that buses will not normally wait for anyone who arrives late at their allocated pick-up point. Students should therefore make their way directly to the correct bus zone at the end of the school day.
🚗 Travelling by Car
Where possible, we encourage students to walk, cycle or use public transport.
Travelling by car is recommended primarily where a student:
- Lives too far away to walk or cycle safely and reasonably; or
- Does not have access to suitable public transport or another safe means of travelling to school.
Reducing unnecessary vehicle movements around the school helps make arrival and departure safer for everyone.
Driving on the School Site
Parents, carers, visitors, bus and coach drivers entering the school site must:
- Follow the school's one-way system.
- Observe the 10 mph speed limit at all times.
- Drive particularly carefully around pedestrians and cyclists.
- Follow signage and any directions provided by school staff.
- Avoid stopping or parking in a way that obstructs pedestrian routes or other vehicles.
- Switch off the vehicle's engine when parked or waiting.
🏡 Eagle Farm Road and Our Local Community
Eagle Farm Road becomes particularly busy at the beginning and end of the school day. We ask everyone to be patient and considerate.
Parents and carers should:
- Never block or partially block residents' driveways.
- Park legally and considerately.
- Leave sufficient room for residents to safely enter and leave their properties.
- Avoid parking in a way that creates a hazard or unnecessarily restricts the road.
- Keep noise to a minimum.
- Show courtesy towards residents, pedestrians and other road users.
Students should similarly behave respectfully when walking through the surrounding residential area.
🌱 No Engine Idling
Stratton School operates a no-idling expectation on the school site.
Cars, taxis, minibuses, coaches and buses that are parked or waiting should have their engines switched off.
This applies whether a vehicle is waiting to collect students, parked between journeys or stationary for another reason.
✅ Our Expectations
However you travel to school:
Plan ahead.
Travel safely.
Be considerate.
Follow the Highway Code.
Respect our neighbours and community.
Look after yourself and others.
Safe and responsible travel is everyone's responsibility and helps make the start and end of the school day safer for students, families, staff and our neighbours.
